A new approach to insomnia treatment
Insomnia can affect much more than your nights — it impacts your energy, focus, mood, and daytime functioning. QUVIVIQ® works differently from some older sleep medicines by reducing wakefulness signals rather than broadly sedating the brain.
How does QUVIVIQ® work?
- It targets the orexin system, which plays a role in keeping you awake.
- By reducing wake signals, it can help you fall asleep more easily and stay asleep longer.
- It is licensed for adults whose insomnia has lasted at least 3 months and has a considerable impact on daytime functioning.

Frequently Asked
Questions
What is insomnia?
Insomnia is a sleep disorder that can cause difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early and struggling to get back to sleep. Long-term insomnia typically lasts for 3 months or longer.
What is QUVIVIQ®?
QUVIVIQ® contains daridorexant. It is licensed in the UK for adult patients with insomnia where symptoms have been present for at least 3 months and have a considerable impact on daytime functioning.
How is QUVIVIQ® different from some other sleeping tablets?
Daridorexant works by blocking orexin receptors, which reduces the wake drive — allowing sleep to occur, rather than broadly sedating the brain.
Do I take it every night?
The recommended dose is once per night in the evening, taken within 30 minutes before bedtime. If you miss your bedtime dose, it should not be taken later during the night.
Can anyone get QUVIVIQ®?
No. It is not suitable for everyone. It is contraindicated in narcolepsy and with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, and is not recommended in severe hepatic impairment. Our clinician will assess whether it is appropriate for you.
Is CBT-I still important?
Yes. CBT-I (cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia) is the standard first treatment for long-term insomnia after sleep hygiene advice. Daridorexant is recommended only if CBT-I has been tried and not worked, or if it is unsuitable or unavailable.
How long should treatment continue?
Treatment should be for the shortest duration possible. It should be assessed within 3 months of starting and stopped if the insomnia has not responded adequately. If continued, it should be reviewed regularly.
Are there any side effects?
Like all medicines, QUVIVIQ® can cause side effects. Warnings include next-day drowsiness or reduced alertness — especially when driving or operating machinery. Caution is advised with alcohol and other CNS depressants because of additive effects. Sleep paralysis, hallucinations, and mood-related concerns are also listed in the warnings section.
Can I drink alcohol while taking it?
Patients should be cautioned about drinking alcohol during treatment with QUVIVIQ®.
Is it habit-forming?
Clinical studies found no evidence of abuse or withdrawal symptoms indicative of physical dependence. However, people with a history of alcohol or substance misuse may be at increased risk for abuse and should be followed carefully.
How quickly does it work?
QUVIVIQ® is taken nightly and reviewed by your prescriber based on response. Clinical evidence supports improvement over 3 months of continuous nightly use.
